What counts as a long weekend here?
DAYREACH treats a long weekend as a tracked bank holiday date that falls on a Monday or Friday. A Monday holiday gives Saturday, Sunday and Monday together; a Friday holiday gives Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A holiday in the middle of the week is still a day off for many people, but it does not extend the weekend, so this page skips it.
Several England and Wales bank holidays naturally create three-day weekends because they are defined as Mondays. The Early May, Spring and Summer Bank Holidays work that way, and Easter Monday follows the Easter weekend.
Fixed-date holidays need one extra note. When Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day falls on a weekend, the official day off can move to a substitute weekday. DAYREACH does not calculate those substitute days on this page, so the official GOV.UK list may show an additional long weekend that is not reflected here.
Planning around a long weekend
Long weekends can be busy for trains, roads, ferries and short breaks, especially when they overlap with school holidays. If school dates affect your plans, check the relevant area on our school holiday pages as well as the official bank holiday list.
