When is National Dog Day 2027?

National Dog Day is always 26 August. It began in the United States and is now also marked by dog owners, organisations and animal-welfare groups in other countries, including the UK.

It was created in 2004 by American animal-welfare advocate Colleen Paige. According to the official National Dog Day site, she chose 26 August because it was the date her family adopted their first dog from a shelter when she was a child.

It is not a public holiday and has no official status in the UK.

An American observance marked internationally

National Dog Day originated in the United States rather than the UK. It is nevertheless widely shared internationally, including in Britain, where animal organisations and dog owners may use the date for welfare and adoption messages.

The day is also sometimes called International Dog Day, although the founder's official site uses the name National Dog Day.
