When is Remembrance Day 2026?

Remembrance Day is always 11 November. It marks the armistice that ended the fighting of the First World War, which took effect at 11am on that date in 1918.

A two-minute silence is widely observed at 11am in workplaces, schools and public places, and is also marked by broadcasters and organisations across the country.

The day is one of remembrance for those who died in war. It is not a public holiday, and the date does not move.

Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday are separate observances. Remembrance Day is fixed to 11 November. Remembrance Sunday falls on the second Sunday in November and is when the national ceremony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall takes place, alongside services at war memorials around the country.

In most years the two dates are different. They coincide only when 11 November itself falls on the second Sunday of the month. This page counts down to 11 November.

The poppy became a symbol of remembrance after the First World War, associated with the flowers that grew on disturbed ground on the Western Front. The Royal British Legion runs the annual Poppy Appeal in the UK.
